Our High School Graduates This Year Are….

High school graduates will be celebrated this Sunday (May 18th) at Hazlehurst First United Methodist Church says the Rev. Bruce Sack, pastor.

This year the church honors Victoria Carter, Jarrett Daniel Anderson and Alexander Roussert at the morning worship.

Also at the monthly family night supper this Sunday at 6 pm the three will be  honored with a meal and gifts.

Death of Dennis Cain

May 3, 2014

Dennis E. Cain, age 60, of Hazlehurst, died Monday, April 21, 2014 in the Community Hospice House in Vidalia.

Mr. Cain was born December 23, 1953 in Jeff Davis County. He was the owner of Dennis Cain Insurance Company and a member of the First United Methodist Church where he served as Sunday School Teacher.
He is preceded in death by his father, Johnnie Buck Cain.

Survivors include his wife Vanny Mam Cain of Hazlehurst; Son and Daughter-in-law, Michael and Paula Carr Cain of Statesboro; Mother, Betty Cain of Hazlehurst; Sister and Brother-in-Law, Susan and Dwayne Creamer of Hazlehurst; Brother and Sister-in-Law, Tim and Janellda Cain of Hazlehurst; Four nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 6-8:00pm at Wainright-Parlor Funeral Home.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday, April 24, 2014 at 11:00am in the First United Methodist Church with Mr. Jeffery Spell, Rev. Kevin Sanders and Rev. J. Barry Owens officiating.

Interment will follow in the Hazlehurst Memorial Cemetery.

Holy Week Services

For the past 4 decades Hazelhurst First United Methodist Church has been hosting  community noon Holy Week services and they will do it again this year.

Rev. Bruce Sack, pastor, says the Monday thru Friday event (April 14 – 18) will be held in the church’s social hall.

There will be a great meal, singing and a message from area pastors of various denominations.

The speakers will be:

  • Monday, Rev. Barry Owens of First Alliance Church
  • Tuesday, Rev. Robert Wigley and Joy Joyner Googe singing
  • Wednesday, Rev. Dr. Robert Huling of Amazing Grace Baptist Church and Sue Duncan will sing
  • Thursday, Rev. Nathan Smith of Hazlehurst Church of God and Justin Smith singing
  • Friday, Rev. Chris Carter of Baxley’s Harpers Chapel UMC


Death of Ronnie McNeal

May 3, 2014

Ronnie Gene McNeal, age 57, of Hazlehurst, died Wednesday, March 5, 2014 at his residence.

Mr. McNeal was born April 30, 1956 in Jeff Davis County to the late Calvin Cary McNeal and the late Mary Alice Dyal. He was a Carpenter and member of First United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his sister, Jeanie Meeks and brother, Jerry McNeal.

Survivors include Two Daughters, Tiffany Becker of Crossville, TN and Jordie Bush of Ringold; Son, Ron McNeal of Hazlehurst; Stepson, David Leggett of Wynder; Two Brothers, Larry McNeal of Milner, Bobby McNeal of Hazlehurst and Eleven Grandchildren.

Visitation will be Thursday evening from 6-8pm at Wainright-Parlor Funeral Home.

Funeral Services will be held Friday, March 7, 2014 at 11:00am in the Chapel of Wainright-Parlor Funeral Home with Rev. Glynn Bohannon and Rev. Royce Hulett officiating.

Death of Gwen Heath

Gwendolyn Stafford “Gwen” Heath, age 96, of Hazlehurst, died Saturday, January 25, 2014 at her residence.

Mrs. Heath was born January 4, 1918, in Camden County to the late David C. Stafford and the late Maud McCarthy Stafford. She was a retired Teacher employed with Jeff Davis County of Board of Education and was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she served on the Pastor Parish Relations Committee and taught Sunday School. She is preceded in death by her husband, Charles W. Heath and sisters, Wilhelmina Stafford Haley, Georgia Stafford Race and infant sister Maude Stafford; brother, David Cuyler Stafford, Jr.

Survivors include Daughter, Charlotte Harvard of Conyers; Nephew, Bob Haley of Orlando; Cousin, Carol Blanc of White Oak; several cousins and friends.

Visitation will be Monday evening from 6-8pm at Wainright-Parlor Funeral Home.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at 2:00pm at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Bruce Sack and Mr. Jeffery Spell officiating, additional services will be held Wednesday, January 29, 2014 at 11:00am in the Waverly United Methodist Church with burial to follow in the Homeward Cemetery in Camden County.

Soup Kitchen

In January 2014 we started a monthly Soup Kitchen for the elderly and the low income or anyone who just wants a meal.  We do this on the 4th Saturday at 11:30 am.   We served about 60 each month January thru April.
