Death of Wendell Thomas

Miles Funeral Home in Hazlehurst announces the memorial service for John Wendel Thomas, age 84, of Hazlehurst, who passed away June 03, 2016. Services will be held at 2 PM Sunday, June 05, 2016 in the Hazlehurst First United Methodist Church.

Rev. Alvin Merritt & Rev. Josh Duckworth will officiate with burial in Palms Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Thomas was born in Quitman, Georgia. He was the son of the late Jesse Thomas & Goldie Jewel Lee Thomas and was the husband of the late Mary Jo McCarthy Thomas and was preceded in death by a sister: Janice Daugharty. He was a US Army Air Corp Veteran, Graduate of Ga. Military College, Graduate of Mercer University, Graduate of Cincinnati Motuary Science College with high honors, Co-Owner of Thomas & Sons Funeral Home, Owner-Operator of Wendel Thomas Egg Farm, Former EMA Director, Member of the Masonic Lodge, and was the Manager, Funeral Director and Embalmer of Miles Funeral Home. Mr. Thomas was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Hazlehurst.

Survivors include: Daughters & Sons-in-law: Faith Thomas, Eleanor & John Moye, Molly & Terry Mullis of Macon, Melisa & Jeff Pace, Janice & Chet Conley of Hazlehurst, Sister: Barbara Somers of Vidalia; Boo-Daddy’s Grandchildren: John Conley, Sarah Nauert, Mary Susan Arnold, Grant Pace, Anna Parks, Matthew Dennis, Erin Caves, Megan Davenport, Jesse Pace, Mary Denson, Thomas Mullis, Adam Mullis; 13 great-grandchildren; several nieces & nephews also survive.

Visitation will be after the service at 3 PM Sunday, June 5, 2016 at the First United Methodist Church Social Hall.

In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made to the First United Methodist Church Helping Hands Food Pantry.


Death of Bonnie Loyless

July 15, 2016

Bonnie Wainright Loyless, age 62, of Hazlehurst, died Tuesday, July 12, 2016 at Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah.

Mrs. Loyless was born April 12, 1954 in Warner Robins to the late Walter Wainright and the late Helen Bazemore Wainright.
She was retired from Jeff Davis County Board of Education and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Hazlehurst.

Survivors include her Daughter and Son-in-law, Deborah and Kevin Tuttle and Granddaughter, Elizabeth Tuttle of Port St. Joe, FL.; several cousins also survived.

Visitation will be held Thursday evening from 6:00-8:00pm at Wainright-Parlor Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held Friday, July 15, 2016 at 2:00pm at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Josh Duckworth officiating. Interment will follow in Palms Memorial Garden.

Mrs. Loyless will lie in state one hour prior to service time.

Family can be contacted at the residence, 104 Wilson Street, Hazlehurst.

Death of Eleanor Faust

August 31, 2015

Miles Funeral Home in Hazlehurst announces the memorial service for Eleanor Williams Faust, age 92, of Hazlehurst, who passed away Friday, August 28, 2015. Services will be held at 4 PM Wednesday in the Chapel of Miles Funeral Home.

Rev. Josh Duckworth & Bro. Jeffery Spell will officiate with burial at a later date in the Hazlehurst City Cemetery.

Mrs. Faust was born in Pittsburgh, PA. She was the daughter of the late George Williams & Mary Timms Homes Williams and the wife of the late Charles B. Faust (Whitey) and was preceded in death by a son: George Faust, Sr.; sister: Dorothy Holder. She was a homemaker and was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Hazlehurst.

Survivors include: Grandchildren: George Faust, Jr & Greg Faust both of Hazlehurst; Great-Grandson: Michael Faust of Missouri.


Death of Mary Sue Day

Mary Sue Day passed away Sunday June 21st.  Our thoughts and prayers are with her mother Shirley Smith & family.

Visitation was Thursday night from 5 to 7 pm with funeral at 7 pm (both are at our church). Watch funeral here.

Mary Sue Elton Day, age 53, of Hazlehurst, died Sunday, June 21, 2015 at Community Hospice in Vidalia.
Mrs. Day was born March 01, 1962 in Telfair County. She was employed with South Georgia Western Star of Douglas and was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

She is preceded in death by her Father, John Harden Elton Sr.
Survivors include her Daughter, Mary Allison Day of Charleston, S.C.; Son, Michael Alexander Day of Hazlehurst; Mother, Shirley Lowery Elton of Hazlehurst; Sister and Brother-in-Law, Hazel and Tony King of Baxley; Brother and Sister-in-Law, John and Lisa Elton of Hazlehurst; several nieces and nephews also survived.


Visitation will be held Thursday evening at the First United Methodist Church from 5:00-7:00 pm with the Funeral Service to follow at 7:00 pm with Rev. Rodney Porter officiating.


Monetary contributions can be made to the First United Methodist Church of Hazlehurst in honor of Mary Sue.


Wainright-Parlor Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements for Mary Sue Elton Day, age 53, of Hazlehurst.


Death of Margaret Wooten

May 26, 2015

Margaret C. Wooten passed away Friday, May 8th, 2015 at a hospice facility in Sugarland, Texas. She had been visiting her son David and her daughter in law Bobby in Houston, Texas. She had been in the hospital in Sugarland for the past two weeks with a collapsed lung and pneumonia before being transferred to the hospice facility.

Margaret was 94 years old and the oldest member of our church.. She began attending and had been a member of First Methodist since the early 1940s. David and Bobby thank you for the phone calls, prayers and for keeping them all in your thoughts during this time.

Miles Funeral Home in Hazlehurst announces the memorial service for Margaret Canady Wooten, age 94, of Houston, Texas, who passed away May 08, 2015 following a short illness. Services will be held at 11 am Thursday, May 28th in the Chapel of Miles Funeral Home in Hazlehurst.

Mrs. Wooten was born December 24th 1920 in Appling County, Georgia to Remer & Jimmie Lou Canady. She attended GAB Business School in Macon and the University of Georgia in Athens. During WW11 she …contributed to the war effort as an administrative employee for the J.A. Jones Construction Company in Brunswick, Georgia. The Jones Company built liberty ships for cargo and transportation purposes during the war. She worked as office manager for 23 years for the Hazlehurst Manufacturing Company. After retirement she volunteered as a Pink Lady for 11 years at the Jeff Davis Hospital. She was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church. She served as President of the Friendship Sunday School Class and Leader of the Circle Two.

She is survived by her son: David A. Wooten and daughter-in-law: Bobby D. Wooten of Houston, Texas; step-children: Erin Renfro of Ashville, NC, Stacey Phillips and Jamie Ekstrom of Fresno, Texas; 8 step-grandchildren: niece: Jackie Slatkow of Delray Beach, Florida; nephew: Victor Tillman of Portland, Texas. She was predeceased by her husband of 63 years Braxton Bragg (BB) Wooten.

Death of Barbara Swain

Our love and prayers surround the family of Barbara Swain who passed away 4-23-15.   Visitation was Friday 6 to 8 pm at Wainright Parlor Funeral Home.  Funeral was Saturday at Oakland Baptist Church at 3 pm.

Barbara Ray Swain, age 56, of Hazlehurst, died Thursday, April 23, 2015 at her residence.

Mrs. Swain was born July 31, 1958 in Jeff Davis County. She was the owner and operator of New Beginnings and member of the First United Methodist Church. She is preceded in death by her Father, Johnny Ray.

Survivors include her Husband, Joe Swain Jr. of Hazlehurst;
Son and Daughter-in-Law, Joseph and Leann McNeal of Savannah; Daughter and Son-in-law, Shauna and John Riggs of Statesboro; Mother, Georgie Ray of LaGrange; Four Sisters, Sandra (Ricky) Adams of AL., Opal (Gene) Hogg, Nita (Toby) Jeffcoat and Jonna (Norman) Ussery all of LaGrange; Two Brothers, Richard (Heather) Ray of Albany and Trampus Ray of LaGrange; several nieces and nephews also survived.

Visitation will be held Friday evening from 6:00-8:00pm at Wainright-Parlor Funeral Home.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, April 25, 2015 at 3:00pm at Oakland Baptist Church with Rev. Royce Hulett and Rev. Bobby Gale officiating. Interment will follow in the Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Swain will lie in state one hour prior to service.

2015 Noon Holy Week Services

March 28, 2015

The 40th annual Noon Holy Week services will be March 30 – April 3.

The service will consist of a great lunch, music and a speaker.  Serving line starts at 11:45.  There will be no meal at the Friday service as we encourage everyone to fast on Good Friday.

The speakers Monday thru Friday respectively will be Rev. Mary Ann Braswell (pastor of Long Hill & Excelsior UMC in Coffee County), Rev. Wayne Roundtree ( associate pastor of Amazing Grace Baptist), Rev. Bobby Gale (interim pastor of Hazlehurst First UMC, Rev. Nathan Smith (pastor of Hazlehurst Church of God on Cromartie Street)  and Rev.  Lindsey Collins (pastor of Swift Creek UMC in Macon).

Rev. Bruce Russell Sack, 49, of Hazlehurst, formerly of Tifton, passed away Wednesday, March 25, 2015, at Select Specialty Hospital in Tallahassee, Florida. A memorial service will be held for Rev. Sack at 11:00 a.m., April 11, 2015, at Tifton’s First United Methodist Church with Rev. Gary Minton officiating. Rev. Sack will be laid to rest at a later date.

Rev. Sack was born December 3, 1965 in Baltimore, Maryland, the son of Doris Fauldrath Sack of Shrewsbury, Pennsylvania and the late Edwin Sack. He was the pastor and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Hazlehurst and the former associate pastor of the First United Methodist Church in Tifton.

In addition to his mother, Rev. Sack is survived by his wife, Janet Ann Watts Sack of Hazlehurst; one son, David Sack of Valdosta; two daughters, Emily Sack of Valdosta and Elizabeth Sack of Hazlehurst; one brother, Stuart Sack of Shrewsbury, Pennsylvania; and three sisters, Ellen Stewart of Stanton, Pennsylvania, Elaine Gardner of New Freedom, Pennsylvania and Barbara Malinich of Shrewsbury, Pennsylvania
